To mark Ada Lovelace Day, we had the opportunity to interview Sue Shelton, an inspirational Technical Skills Instructor in Aeronautical Engineering, and the only female technician in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering, and Media at DMU.
Sue’s journey is a testament to passion and perseverance in a male-dominated field. In the interview she reflected on the challenges she has faced throughout her career and the importance of following what you love. Her message to young women interested in STEM who might feel intimidated by the gender gap was clear and encouraging: “Do it anyway! If you are doing something that you love to do, it’s not a job, it’s interesting.“
Sue also shared how role models and mentors helped her navigate her career. Her insights resonate with the legacy of Ada Lovelace, reminding us of the importance of diversity in innovation and encouraging more women to step into these fields.
As we celebrate Ada Lovelace Day, Sue’s story stands as an inspiring example of the possibilities that lie ahead for women in STEM. Watch the full interview below to hear more about her journey.
Beginning Tuesday, 8th of October, and running throughout the week, we invite you to visit our poster display featuring notable women in computing at the main entrance of Gateway House. Join us to discover more about these inspiring women and their contributions!
